Animating Realism: Modern Warfare 2 and Avatar

Live action versus animation, which would be better for Contra Alliance? If given the option, and complete decision-making control, Contra Alliance would become live action in the same vain as Lord of the Rings or Star Wars. However, from the earliest planning days, animation was seen as a perfect way for delivering at least sub-components of the story, if not the primary installments. One problem was the style of animation available in the early part of the decade — it wasn’t realistic enough.

For my own purposes, I tried to quantify the requirements needed for animation to work for Contra Alliance. Detailed in the first Franchise Guide in 2006, Modified Anime Realism Cartoons (MARC) was to become a photo-realistic brand for the trilogy. Two recent trailers look like the animation I hoped for back then: Modern Warfare 2 and Avatar. When Contra Alliance becomes animated, the perfect balance of combat realism, character detail, and visual effects is now available thanks to the folks at Infinity Ward and James Cameron’s vision for photorealistic CGI.

These evolutions in animation technology will undoubtedly open doors for future storytelling to push boundaries and deliver impact. Someone put Contra Alliance at the front of the line. Thanks.
